1. What kind of maintenance does a pond need?
If you have fish in your pond, you will need to carry out different weekly, monthly and annual maintenance work to keep your pond clean, running well and healthy for your fish. You should test your water on a weekly basis to ensure the water quality is within the ideal parameters to maintain good fish health. Poor water quality is the biggest cause of problems with fish health. Monthly maintenance work should include cleaning both the pump and filter to remove waste build up and/or blockages. Waterfalls should also be cleaned to remove algae build up. If you have a UV unit in your filter system, you should replace the bulb in the unit annually. We recommend this is carried out in springtime as this will help keep your water clear through the sunny months. We offer a maintenance service which includes all the above, with the addition of a small pond vacuum carried out to help reduce the amount of sludge or waste in the bottom of the pond. Contact one of our advisors if you would like a price for this service.
2. How do I keep my pond healthy?
To ensure your pond remains a healthy and thriving environment for your fish, we recommend that you carry out weekly water testing to check the water parameters and address any issues which may arise. If you do experience water problems, we can offer advice over the phone on how to correct these. Additionally, regular, monthly cleaning of your pump and filter system are essential to maintain healthy water quality.
3. Is a garden pond hard to maintain?
No, garden ponds are quite easy to maintain as long as you have an adequate filtration system installed. The filter system will do most of the hard work for you, but you will need to clean your pump and filter monthly so that it can work effectively. Additionally, you should also carry out weekly water testing to ensure your water quality is within the healthy parameters to maintain good fish health.
4. How to stop a pond from going stagnant?
To prevent your pond from going stagnant you should install a pump and filter system. This will keep the water circulating around the pond and the filter will help to keep it clean.
5. How often should I change the water in my pond?
If you have fish in your pond, we do not recommend changing the water completely. Regular, monthly maintenance of your filter system should help to keep the water clean and healthy for your fish. If you are experiencing high levels of ammonia or nitrites in the water, partial water changes may be required in order to restore healthy conditions. Always seek advice on this as changing too much water at one time can also be harmful to fish. If you are concerned about your water quality, call and speak to one of our advisors who will be happy to advise you.
6. How do I keep algae out of my pond?
Algae will always be present in a pond. It is impossible to keep a pond completely free of all algae as it will naturally grow on any surface which is under water. Rocks, liners and any other surfaces underneath the water will eventually have algae growth present. However, there are things that you can do to help if you are experiencing excessive amounts of algae. If your water itself is green with algae, then installing a UV unit on your system will eradicate this. Similarly, if you have problems with blanket weed growing in your pond (this often looks like clumps of green algae or long stringy hair) then there are treatments available which you can add to your pond water to eradicate this. If you are unsure what type of algae problem you have, you can call and ask one of our advisors who can help you identify this.
7. How to get crystal clear pond water?
This depends on what the colour of your pond water is. If your pond water is green, then installing a UV unit on your system will eradicate this and restore clarity to your water. If your water is brown or cloudy then this could be down to a variety of factors such as overfeeding, overstocking, insufficient filtration, soil deposits washing into the pond from nearby, or from pond plants within the pond. If you are unsure on the cause of your murky water or are having trouble identifying the colour of your water, call one of our advisors and we can help you identify and establish the problem and advise you on how to restore clarity.
