POND CLEANS

Professional Pond Cleaning for a Healthier, Clearer Pond

Unless your pond is equipped with a gravity-fed filtration system running off a bottom drain, regular pond cleaning is essential to maintain water quality and prevent long-term issues. At Ponds Northwest, we recommend draining and deep cleaning contemporary Koi ponds every 3–5 years and natural ponds every 2 years to ensure a thriving aquatic environment.

Even with an efficient filtration system, waste and sludge naturally accumulate at the bottom of the pond over time. If left unchecked, this buildup can lead to poor water quality, algae blooms, blocked filters and pumps, and reduced visibility, ultimately affecting the health of your fish and pond life.

Our professional pond cleaning service is designed to remove debris, restore filtration efficiency, and create a cleaner, healthier habitat for your fish and wildlife. With expert care and attention to detail, we bring your pond back to life, ensuring crystal-clear water and an optimal environment for your aquatic ecosystem.

Pond Cleaning FAQs

1. How much does it cost to clean and drain a pond?

The cost of a full empty and clean service varies greatly and depends upon factors such as the size of your pond, the condition in which your pond is currently in and the extent of the growth of plants in your pond. Usually, it is possible to offer a price for this service without a site visit. However, other times it may be necessary to carry out a site visit before we can give you a price. If you would like further information on this service or would like a quote, please call and speak to one of our advisors.

2. How often should a pond be cleaned?

The type of pond you have and the filtration system you use will determine how often your pond should be fully cleaned out. Koi ponds with bottom drains for example, require much less frequent cleanouts that standard garden ponds with a small filter. Our recommendation for a typical garden pond would be that you should have it cleaned out approximately every three to five years.

3. What is the best way to clean a dirty or neglected pond?

Before you attempt to clean out a dirty or neglected pond you should always check what type of liner your pond is lined with. PVC liners for example, can become very brittle and easily damaged and unlike rubber liners, they cannot be successfully repaired on a long-term basis. Once you have established that your liner is rubber, you are ready to begin. If you are unsure on how to identify what type of liner you have, call one of our advisors who will be happy to guide you through this.

If you have fish, you will need to move them to a temporary holding tank along with a good percentage of your pond water. We do not recommend that you use fresh tap water, either in the temporary holding tank, or to completely refill your pond. Always aim to retain at least 30% – 50% of your original pond water to return to your pond after cleaning, as too much fresh tap water may cause stress to your fish which can be harmful.

You should then pump out the remainder of the pond water and remove the sludge and debris that has settled on the bottom. This may need to be done by hand if there is a significant build up. Pond plants will need to be cut back and thinned out from the roots. You can repot any plants that you wish to preserve. The pond liner and any rocks or features etc can then be cleaned thoroughly with a jet wash. Once you have restored the pond to a good standard, you can then return your original water and your fish to the pond and then top the pond up with fresh tap water. Remember to use dechlorinater, to remove harmful chemicals and reduce stress to the fish.

Ponds Northwest offers a full pond cleaning service. We make things easier for you as we have all the specialist equipment required such as professional holding tanks and years of experience handling and moving fish. If you would like a quote for this service on your pond, please give us a call.

4. How do I remove sludge from my pond?

If your sludge is very watery and thin, it can be removed with a specialist pond vacuum. If the sludge that has settled in the bottom of your pond is very thick and dense, you cannot vacuum this out as it will block and possibly damage the vacuum. The best way to remove this is usually to bucket it out by hand. This can be quite a laborious task, so if you would like us to provide you with a quote for our full pond cleaning service, give us a call.

5. Why is my pond water brown and cloudy?

Brown water in a pond is usually caused by soil deposits in the water. This may be due to nearby soil washing into the pond or from soil in your potted pond plants.

Cloudy water is usually caused by overfeeding or over-crowding in your pond, or insufficient filtration. Overfeeding your fish or overstocking your pond, results in the filtration system not being able to cope with, and breakdown the waste effectively. When your pond filter is not working effectively, it leaves small particles present in the pond giving the appearance of cloudy water. If you have further questions or would like some advice on how to restore clarity to your pond, give us a call.

Ponds Northwest design and installed a stunning pond into our garden in Widnes. The lads didn’t have the best weather but was prepared and work continued. The standard of the finished pond is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend them.
