NATURAL SWIM PONDS

A natural swim pond is a swimming area designed to look and function like a natural body of water while being clean and safe for swimming—without the use of harsh chemicals like chlorine.

Swim ponds have the look of a natural pond, with rocks, gravel and natural, organic shapes but have the space and depth to allow for swimming. Swim ponds rely on plants and biological filtration to keep the water clear and healthy.

Natural swim ponds are comprised of two zones. One swimming zone, which is a deep, open area for swimming and one regeneration zone, which is a shallower area filled with aquatic plants and gravel that naturally filter the water.

Once established, a swim pond requires minimal maintenance compared to a conventional swimming pool.

One key feature of a swim pond is the lack of harsh chemicals. Plants, beneficial bacteria, and gravel act as a biological filter to clean the water, which eliminates the need for chemicals such as chlorine.

Comprising of natural and organic feature, swim ponds attract wildlife such as dragonflies, and birds, while remaining safe for human use.

Benefits of a Natural Swim Pond:

  • Eco-friendly and sustainable
  • No chemical irritation for skin and eyes
  • Blends beautifully into the landscape
  • Lower long-term maintenance costs

1. How do swim ponds stay clean?

Swim ponds stay clean using natural filtration systems instead of chlorine or chemicals. Swim ponds rely on a combination of biological processes with the use of gravel to allow growth of beneficial bacteria and microorganisms which break down organic waste, plants which absorb excess nutrients and prevent algae growth, and circulation to keep the water clear, oxygenated and safe for swimming.

2. How deep is a swim pond?

A standard depth for a swim pond will be around 1.5 meters.

3. Should you shower after swimming in a swim pond?

You should always shower before and after swimming in a swim pond. Showering before swimming prevents the introduction of any bacteria or chemicals from substances such as: sunscreen, lotions, perfumes or body sweat, which may affect the water quality. Showering after swimming removes any debris, sediment or organic compounds in the water, which some people with sensitive skin may react to if it is left to linger on the skin.
